University of Nebraska-Lincoln mass littering events
At the first touchdown of every home game, Nebraska Huskers has been releasing thousands of balloons. This time honored tradition began over 60 years ago. There was some concern over Helium supplies in 2012, but UN-L felt those issues were resolved and resumed their regular mass littering events. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln also includes balloon releases at homecoming events, memorials, & celebrations.
We understand the University is making efforts to be more sustainable, yet wasting a finite resource and tossing thousands of pieces of trash is not conducive to those efforts. Previous correspondence with UN-L officials recited nonsense from their balloon provider, stating their balloons are “100% natural latex biodegradable” & will “break down immediately.” It is proven their balloons (as all latex balloons) are not natural & they do not break down harmlessly. They pollute the countryside & risk injury or death to any animal that comes in contact with their fallen garbage.
