Hope Community School, Orkney Islands of Scotland

July 11, 2015

Much respect to the awesome kids at the Hope Community School in the beautiful Orkney Islands of Scotland. Concerned over the many balloons found polluting their beaches and endangering wildlife, they took action. They wrote their Council Members persuading them to consider introducing a policy to help prevent this aerial littering. Their teacher, Kate Towsey, said the children wanted to do something which would make a difference to the beaches where they play. Among the rubbish they find on the beaches there are often bits of balloons.

The children want Orkney to be as nice a place as possible, they have taken a real responsibility for improving the community where they live and are helping to make changes for the better for all of us. Committee members agreed to recommend that the release of balloons and lanterns should be prohibited from Council-owned land and from all Council events, wherever the location.

Good job, young friends! Thumbs down to balloons, thumbs up to you!
