"As a wildlife biologist and filmmaker, I have found countless balloons all over many landscapes and within the dead carcasses of animals. Many of the locations being extremely remote. Obviously balloons do not discriminate. As naive children, we enjoy balloons, at the same time we are told littering is wrong. Along the way this activity becomes a contradiction to our duty to act as stewards to care for our habitat. Balloons cause damage and the ignorance that they harbor is unsettling. I still cannot understand why littering is a crime (an obvious one) and littering the sky with balloons is not. Balloons’ ability to defy gravity is not an reason, the releaser is at fault. Its that “out of sight, out of mind” attitude merged with short lived pleasures. Banning balloons (like the plastic bag movement) all together is the only concrete approach to deflating this issue."
